Government claims that it is committed to tackling hate crime against trans people

Equalities minister Lynne Featherstone has said the government is committed to tackling hate crime against trans people.

Ms Featherstone said the government was “determined to tackle hate crime” and was committed to publishing a Transgender Action Plan.

She said:

“Together, we must tackle the transphobic prejudice which holds transgender people, and society, back. Equality is for all. That is why we have already committed to improving support and reporting services for transgender victims of hate crime – both by helping transgender people access help and by ensuring that services are better able to meet their needs.”

The Transgender Day of Remembrance was set aside to memorialise those who were killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The event is held in November to honor Rita Hester, whose murder on November 28th, 1998 kicked off the “Remembering Our Dead” web project and a San Francisco candlelight vigil in 1999. Rita Hester’s murder — like most anti-transgender murder cases — has yet to be solved.

Trans Memorial Day happens each year on 20 November, and is to commemorate the appalling, and continuing murderous attacks to which trans people are subject across the world. It is an important chance to give recognition to a section of our community who are too often left out.

An opportunity for trans people, their friends, families and allies to come together to reflect on those trans people who have lost their lives through violence or suicide just because they are trans.
It is a time to remember, mourn and celebrate them and to tell their stories so they are not forgotten.

Trans is an umbrella term and is difficult to pin down in a neat definition one of the best we have found is from the Scottish Equality Network

People whose gender identity or gender expression differ from the ‘norms’ expected by the society they live in, including transsexual people, cross-dressing people, intersex people and androgyne/polygender people.
