LGBT History Month News from the Plymouth LGBT Archive

The Heritage Lottery Funded, Pride in Our Past project reached completion in 2012 with its own exhibition at the Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and the formation of the award winning Plymouth LGBT Community Archive.

The Pride in Our Past project website created and hosted by Pride in Plymouth will be transformed over the next week or so providing further links to the rich content held in the archive and other relevant LGBT History sites, news and events.

Over the last several weeks, a great deal of cataloguing work has been taking place with the Plymouth LGBT Archive since it was deposited at the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office. The physical collection can now been searched – either in person or online at www.plymouth.gov.uk/archivescatalogue – where it is held under the collection number 3901.

In addition to this, throughout February’s LGBT history month, the archive will be presenting a number of highlights from the Oral History interviews on the community archive’s own website: http://plymlgbtarchive.org.uk/
These have been selected and collected around certain themes which particularly relate to the LGBT history of the city of Plymouth and lead up to Peter Tatchell’s visit and talk “Queer Britain: The struggle for LGBT human rights 1958 to 2012” which is taking place on the 6th March.

On a Friday night after a drunken house party with his straight mates, Russell heads out to a gay club, alone and on the pull. Just before closing time he picks up Glen but what’s expected to be just a one-night stand becomes something else, something special. That weekend, in bars and in bedrooms, getting drunk and taking drugs, telling stories and having sex, the two men get to know each other.

It is a brief encounter that will resonate throughout their lives. Weekend is both an honest and unapologetic love story between two guys and a film about the universal struggle for an authentic life in all its forms. Plymouth’s Inspirational LGBT History Archive wins National Award

In March 2011 we proudly announced the award of a Heritage Lottery grant to support the Plymouth LGBT history and archive project – Pride in Our Past officially launched on the 1st July 2011. Yesterday (27/06/12) all the hard work of many volunteers over the past year has received national recognition with an award from the Community Archives and Heritage Group who have announced the Pride in Our Past project as winners of the ‘Most Inspirational Community Archive‘. Well done to all that have contributed to this amazing, successful and now award winning project.

Alan Butler the Archive Co-ordinator and collaborative PhD student accepted the award on behalf of the Pride in our Past project at the sixth annual Community Archives and Heritage Group conference held in London on 27th June 2012. Alan gave a presentation about the Pride in Our Past project that was well received by delegates from community archives from across the UK. Tony Davey from the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office said how proud he was to be involved in the Pride in Our Past project.

National award for ‘Pride in our Past’

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history of the City of Plymouth wins’ Most Inspirational Community Archive’

A project to uncover and celebrate the little-discussed lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) history of the City of Plymouth has won ‘Most Inspirational Community Archive’ in the first national awards given by the Community Archives and Heritage Group.

The judges praised the way the project had ‘gathered the voices of and given a voice to often-ignored communities’.

‘Pride in our Past’ was made possible by an award from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) of £35,000 which enabled the Plymouth Pride Forum and other LGBT groups and individuals, from within the city of Plymouth, to work in collaboration with the Plymouth and West Devon Record Office, and create an archive to access, frame and interpret this often unconsidered aspect of Plymouth’s history. Much of the specific history of the LGBT community was stored only in the memories of its older members and was therefore likely to be lost if not captured.

A number of volunteers worked as oral historians and community archivists. They interviewed members of the LGBT community about their experiences of living in Plymouth and collected photographs and other documents and memorabilia.

‘The visible part of this project was to capture information, artefacts and memories’, says Alan Butler, PhD student with Plymouth University. ‘But the project’s impact has been all about people and all about pride. ‘Pride in Our Past’ has allowed many to reclaim their own past in its entirety and celebrate it. We’re delighted to be honoured with this national award.’

From April till the end of June, the “Pride in Our Past” project has formed the basis of an exhibition at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery and highlighted the on-going work of Plymouth’s new LGBT archive.

A Talk by Dr Meredith Miller, (University College Falmouth)

What is it like to live in a society where the life you live is virtually invisible?

This talk looks at paperback pulp fiction of the postwar era, and the ways in which lesbians used it to create a sense of community identity.
What is the relationship between subcultural identity and mainstream media?
The talk will raise some of these questions through a look at the covers of these paperbacks, at the history of their publication, and firsthand accounts from lesbians of what reading about other lesbians meant to them in the 1950s and 60s.

Dr Meredith Miller has published widely on sexuality and popular fiction. Her Historical Dictionary of Lesbian Literature was published by Rowman and Littlefield in 2006.

Plymouth LGBT archive shining light on City’s LGBT past – diverse archive in the making

When the Pride in Our Past exhibition draws to it’s conclusion on 30th June, and much of the material collected moves to its permanent home in the Plymouth and West Devon Records office, it becomes more important than ever to continue the fantastic work that has been achieved by volunteers so far.

Whilst the exhibition has been on show work has been going on behind the scenes building the the on-line Plymouth LGBT archive using the key themes of the exhibition for the primary navigation.

The archive logo has been designed by volunteer Carrie Anne, which represents the

‘light we’re shining on Plymouth’s LGBT past’.

The Archive website is now live and there is plenty more material to upload, including the supporting oral histories collected over the past year.

Carrie also designed the new Pride in Plymouth Logo that has become the ‘brand symbol’ for Pride in the Park, she says:

The logo illustrates my love for Plymouth and by using images from photographs that I have taken of the Hoe and the Barbican it makes the logo feel more personal to the town and being gay myself I thought that Pride in Plymouth was perfect as you remind me that I’m not alone and that it is ok to be who I am.

Our work in supporting the Pride in Our Past project in developing the on-line archive has meant that our blog post and social network updates have been a bit sparse over the past few weeks – have lots to catch up on and will be all systems go for Pride in the Park.

Here is a screen shot from the new Plymouth LGBT archive website that demonstrates the diversity of the material collected on one side the early years looking at subcultures and an underground scene complemented by ‘family matters’ and ‘Reflection on Transition’ in more recent times.

Olympic Torch to Join Warren Cup in City Saturday 19th May

On Saturday 19th May 2012 the Olympic Torch will arrive in Plymouth There will be lots of places along the route to see the Olympic Flame beginning in Devonport at 7.40pm. As the torch makes its way to the Hoe it will pass close to Hawkins Meeting House at the junction of Brettonside and Buckwell Street. The pub will be open as usual so pop on down to this area to celebrate this once in a lifetime chance to see the torch in Plymouth.

If you are in the city to celebrate the torch relay you may also like to visit the City Museum and Art Gallery where there is another rare opportunity to see the Warren Cup on show outside of London as part of the Pride in Our Past Exhibition.

Plymouth provides the first overnight stop for the torch and there is a mega party planed on the Hoe in the evening with Chart topping star Labrinth headlining an evening of live, free entertainment on the Hoe.

Pride in Our Past Exhibition opens in Plymouth

The Heritage Lottery funded Pride in Our Past exhibition at Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery opened to the public on 28th April. Over 100 invited guest joined volunteers and contributors at an evening reception and private view held on Friday May 4th.

This thought-provoking exhibition is based on new research into the City’s LGBT communities and includes personal stories, objects, photographs and more. It spans three centuries and captures the heart of the changing ‘scene’ over the decades, as well as the political struggle both past and present.

The exhibition includes the priceless 2000 year old ‘Warren Cup’ that is on loan from the British Museum in London, a portrait by Plymouth artist Robert Lenkiewicz, and one of the Beryl Cook paintings from the Lockyer Tavern.

The latest technology has also been incorporated in the exhibition with iPADS available to view hi res photo galleries or hear more of the oral histories that have been collected over the past year.

Relevant excerpts from the oral histories can be heard through PEN friends that hang next to many of the display panels.

One corner of the gallery is dedicated to ‘In Other Words‘ Plymouth’s famous gay bookshop, many books have been frozen for a period of time before being put on public display. Visitors are welcome to sit in the comfy seats and browse through the books, on the coffee table there is selection of children’s books.

Hilary Bracegirdle from the Heritage Lottery Fund spoke at the reception held on 4th May saying how pleased she was that Pride in Our Past is not a ‘token’ project and this is reflected in this amazing exhibition. Hillary will be providing positive feedback to lottery headquarters informing them how well the grant of £35000 has been spent.

Alan Butler was thanked by the chair of the forum, he has worked tirelessly on the project with co-ordinator Helen Philips and whole series of volunteers.

Warren Cup to be exhibited in Plymouth as part of the Pride in Our Past exhibition

The Pride in Our Past team with staff from the City Museum and Art Gallery has come up trumps with the British Museum in London agreeing to loan the Warren Cup to Plymouth for the Pride in Our Past exhibition.

The Warren Cup is in the top 100 UK artefacts a museum can exhibit – An ancient Roman drinking cup made from solid silver with relief decoration of homoerotic scenes, this object takes its name from its first owner in modern times, the art-lover and collector Edward Perry Warren (1860-1928).

The cup was acquired by the British Museum, in 1999 for £1.8 million (including Heritage Lottery Fund, National Art Collections Fund and The British Museum Friends contributions) to prevent its going abroad. This was, at that time, the most expensive single item ever acquired by The British Museum, and many times the price at which it had been offered to them in the 1950s.

In addition there will be a portrait by Plymouth artist Robert Lenkiewicz that has never been publicly exhibited before.

The Exhibition will make available to the public historical, cultural, and artistic materials related to the lesbian, gay bisexual and trans communities in Plymouth will open on 28th April 2012.

Volunteers working on the Pride in Our Past project have recorded loads of oral histories and collected memorabilia from a cross section of the LGBT community that has provided plenty of rich material for inclusion in the exhibition.

Pride in Our Past Photography Competition Presentation 18th Feb Plymouth Arts Centre

The Heritage Lottery Funded ‘Pride in Our Past’ project are creating an archive of LGBT life in Plymouth and are holding a series of informal drop ins where you can come along to share your stories or bring any memorabilia or artefacts that may be of interest. On Saturday 18th February we hope to present the lucky winner of our photography competition with their £250 prize as part of our planned drop in at the Plymouth Arts Centre.

The Drop in will take place between 3 and 4.30pm and subject to availability we will present the prize, if the winner is not available then we will reschedule the presentation. The drop ins are held in friendly relaxed environments where you can come along to meet some of the volunteers working on the Pride in Our Past project and find out more about the up coming exhibition.
