After much delay and stalling by Plymouth City Council (four months) we can now announce that PRIDE in the PARK will take place on Saturday 20th July returning to the fabulous Devonport Park.

The 2013 event will follow a similar format to last years successful event utilising the bandstand as the main stage and stalls around the sides. The popular inflatable slide will be back with few extra ‘fun fair’ activities to enjoy. Our entertainments organiser Jazmin has been very busy building interest from acts and bands – now we have the date confirmed we will soon announce the line up.

MONEY and TIME is TIGHT but Plymouth will have PRIDE!

The one thing the council (Social Inclusion) has been clear about is there are NO FUNDS AVAILABLE to support PRIDE!

Therefore we have to raise the money ourselves last year our three main funding streams was the Pride Bar, the Raffle, and Stalls and sponsorship.

Don’t forget you can make a secure donation towards the cost of this years event through Pay Pal.

On Wednesday 24th April starting at 7pm we holding an open meeting at Plymouth’s newest Venue – The Diamond Queen to discuss the event, fundraising options and hopefully fill some key roles within the organising group.

Introducing the New Look Pride in Plymouth Blog and Website

Welcome to the new combined Pride in Plymouth website and blog.

In 2009, we launched the Pride in Plymouth website, shortly complemented by our own blog. Unfortunately in February 2012, our main site was hacked . There is never a good time for this to happen but it was particularly difficult for us as we were just about to announce ‘Pride in the Park’. However we believe that every cloud has a silver lining (Resurgam) ‘I shall rise again’, we built a temporary site to promote Pride in the Park, and worked in the background building this site. The result is a new site with a ‘responsive design’ that magically adjusts to mobile devices such as the iPad and iPhone. We have also created a backup site which we can switch to when needed.

We will continue to build the rich content of the site, with the blog at the core of our news network. The time and resource saved by maintaining one site will enable us to effectively share more news across our network.

Pride in Plymouth continuing to ‘Bring People, News, and Events together’ whilst promoting Plymouth, the gay scene and city life to the wider LGBT audience.

Our presence on social networks Facebook and Twitter has been invaluable during this transitional period, and we continue to work on further integration with these services into our network.

Commenting on our content is now even easier as in addition to the standard comment system you can now use your Facebook, Twitter, or WordPress accounts to have your say.

The logo illustrates my love for Plymouth and by using images from photographs that I have taken of the Hoe and the Barbican it makes the logo feel more personal to the town and being gay myself I thought that Pride in Plymouth was perfect as you remind me that I’m not alone and that it is ok to be who I am.

Cornwall Pride 2012

The fifth Cornwall Pride took place in Truro on Saturday 25th August (Bank Holiday weekend).

After four years of glorious weather, the wet summer of 2012 proved too much for the picnic in the park. This year Cornwall Pride invoked the wet weather contingency and held the free afternoon event in and around the Marquee at Lemon Quay. Even though this was not as good as the beautiful Victoria Gardens we have to congratulate the organisers of Cornwall Pride for being able to make the most of a very wet day.

The parade went ahead as planned and was well supported despite the weather.

The ticketed evening event was unaffected and the Marquee soon filled with pride party goers who enjoyed a packed evening of live entertainment.

Brighton Pride 2012

DJ Norman Cook – AKA Fatboy Slim – has joined the line up for the 20th anniversary Brighton Pride festival being held on the 1st September.

The parade will start at 11am from Madeira Drive, in front of the Brighton wheel and make its way to Preston Park for the main festival that is packed with entertainment.

Seen as a highlight of the local, national and European Pride Calendar. The park event brings people locally and nationally together for an unforgettable celebration of Brighton & Hove and the LGBT diversity within.

Preston Park in the heart of Brighton hosts one of the biggest and best Pride events in the country. The park is always packed with smiling faces and enough entertainment to keep everyone happy.

UK Black Pride Saturday 18th August 2012 Ministry of Sound London

UK Black Pride, Europe’s biggest celebration of African, Asian, Caribbean and Arab LGBT people, is honoured to announce British Soul legend OMAR as the headline act.

UK Black Pride promotes unity and co-operation among all Black people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern and Latin American descent, as well as their friends and families, who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender.

The organisation is committed to producing an annual celebration of “Black Pride”, as well as organising a variety of activities throughout the year in and around the UK which also promote and advocate for the spiritual, emotional, and intellectual health and well-being of all related communities. Our aim is to foster, present and celebrate Black LGBT culture through education, the arts, cultural events and advocacy.

The seventh UK Black Pride festival will take place on Saturday 18th August at the Ministry of Sound, London from 12noon until 8:30pm. Alongside British soul legend OMAR who headlines the main stage, the best DJs on the club scene in the dance areas, four licensed bars, a cocktail bar, VIP area, world food, education and welfare workshops, community stalls, prizes and much more.

Dates for your diary South West Pride events 2012

As June approaches the summer gay pride season is about to kick off with London hosting ‘World Pride‘ this year the UK pride calendar has never been so packed. On 28th July Plymouth re-joins the Pride circuit with ‘Pride in the Park’ Plymouth’s first proper outdoor pride celebration being held in the glorious grounds of Devonport Park.

Cornwall Pride returns to Truro on the August Bank Holiday Saturday 25th August, and Pride Torbay is taking place a little later this year 7th – 9th September.

Arte Latte LGBT Coffee Group 3rd Wednesday of the Month – Plymouth Arts Centre

Arte Latte a coffee group for LGBT people and friends every 3rd Wednesday of the month at Plymouth Arts Centre meet between 5.30 and 7.30pm. Come along for chat, gossip or just to chill after work. Find out more about the Pride in Our past exhibition that opens on the 28th April or the Pride in the Park event happening on July 28th.

The First Arte Latte will be on Wednesday 18th April and then every 3rd Wednesday of the month.

Announcing PRIDE in the PARK 2012

We are very proud to announce Plymouth will have a Gay Pride Celebration this year and it will be Plymouth’s first proper outdoor Pride.

PRIDE in the PARK will take place on Saturday 28th July 2012 in the glorious grounds of Devonport Park.

Pavilion Cafe

The event will be centred around the new bandstand which will provide the main stage, there will be marquees for health, LGBT History and a Bar Tent. Traditional Devon cream teas will be served around the Sicilian fountain in the quieter rose garden. There will be a range of hot foods and refreshments on sale from the Pavilion Cafe and hopefully a BBQ too.

There is plenty of space for stalls and will be able to rent out a limited number of gazebos for stall holders. Please contact us if you would like to have a stall at the event.

Cream teas will be served in the Rose Garden

This event has been made possible by the fact that the Heritage Lottery encourages HLF funded community groups to promote and support each other. Our own Heritage Lottery Funded Pride in Our Past project has linked with the community group ‘The Friends of Devonport Park’ who have received a substantial lottery grant to rebuild the bandstand. One of the 10M marquees available will be used by the Pride in Our Past team for history displays and to conduct further research for the Plymouth LGBT history archive.

Contact us if you would like to volunteer to support this fantastic opportunity, we will need volunteers to help with fund-raising events between now and the 28th July.

On the day we will need volunteer stewards to help set up and decorate the park and of course clear up at the end. We hope to run our own bar so will require volunteers to run it, volunteers will receive a T-shirt, and meal voucher on the day and if we run our own bar a FREE drink too.

Pride Torbay Presents SHOWBOAT – From Princess Pier, 7pm. £6 or £10 with club entry to 80’s party at Club Rainbow (includes a donation to the pride charities).

Meadfoot Inn – The team at Torquay’s longest running gay bar invite you to an evening of boozing, schmoozing and song, with DJ Teja hosting the karaoke. Don’t forget you can grab a delicious bite to eat in the Back Room till 9.30pm. Booking advised.

Candyfloss Pride Opening Party
Candyfloss, Rock Road. 10.30pm – 2am. £3 (includes a donation to the pride charities).
The Candyfloss opening night party is the perfect way to begin your pride weekend in decadent style, with DJ’s on both floors spinning the dance anthems and retro kitsch.

Saturday 30th July

Pride Breakfasts
Start your Pride Saturday with a celebratory breakfast – it’s the most important meal of the day, don’t you know. The Meadfoot Inn and Harbour View will both be serving breakfasts before the walk starts, with booking essential.

Rainbow Cafe. – FREE EVENT
Unity Hall, Montpellier Road (behind Debenhams). 1pm onwards.
Enjoy good company and a FREE breakfast at the monthly Rainbow Cafe. All welcome! To help boost Pride funds there will be a super indoors Boot Sale with lots of bargains!

Pride Torbay Presents – The Rainbow Walk – FREE EVENT
Beacon Quay, Torquay Harbourside. Warm-up from 10.30am, walk starts at 11am.
Choose one of the six colours of the gay rainbow flag and dress in that colour to help us create a giant human rainbow flag leading people to the park party. Sign up for your colour at www.pridetorbay.org. Prizes for best costume in each colour.

Pride Torbay Presents – Pride in the Park with Joe McElderry
Hollicombe Park (coast road between Torquay and Paignton). 12pm till 8pm. £12.50 in advance, £17.50 on pride weekend.
Showcase event of the entire weekend featuring a main stage, shopping village, food stalls, fairground rides, bar areas, a Pimms and Picnic and the Marldon Marquees dance tent.

This is the big one, with all three floors open and usually a queue down the street, so plan to get there early! Expect an outrageous night of cruising, boozing and schmoozing and throwing a few shapes on one of the dancefloors.

Poptarts and Disco Divas Party and a whole night of the best chart and commercial remixes as well as classic remixed tracks from the days of disco. Please note Key West is a gay and bisexual male only resort.

Sunday 31st July

The Heritage Walk.- Free Event
Meet at The Pavilion, 11am – 1pm. FREE EVENT (Pride charity donations welcome)
A relaxed and accessible stroll around the harbour area, discovering some of the notorious hangouts and characters who have added a spot of colour to the Bay’s gay heritage. We will end up at the Cliff House Hotel.

A Wonderful Cream Tea – FREE EVENT
The Unity Hall, next to the Unitarian Church, Montpellier Road (behind Debenhams).
Held by the Metropolitan Community Church to commemorate ten years in the Bay. Music, good company and laughter are guaranteed! Open to all and completely free!

Barbecue and Pool Party – Key West Resort, Daddyhole Road
Hang out by the pool in the stunning gardens of the UK’s first gay resort hotel and enjoy some great food and company. The team will also be donating all profits from the barbecue to the pride charities. Please note Key West is a gay and bisexual male only resort.

Cliff House Goes to Hollywood
3pm onwards. £3.50 (including food and a pride charity donation)
A truly All-Things-American afternoon and evening of outrageous fun and games, including karaoke by the fabulous All Stars. Dress in stars of the silver screen style! Bar facilities available to complement the succulent burgers, hotdogs, sauces and salads.

Cabaret at the Meadfoot Inn – The Meadfoot Inn, Meadfoot Lane. 4.30pm onwards
An afternoon and evening of camp fun and entertainment starring Shaz M, Philip Lindon and DJ Teya. The Pride Torbay raffle will also be drawn at 9.30pm. You’ll also be able to get cabs to the Candyfloss Pride Closing Party for just £4.

The big finish to the entire pride weekend and if last year was anything to go by, you should certainly save some energy and pocket money for this. Come and party with the staff from all of the venues, who have been working their socks off over the weekend and we’ll see you on the dance floor!

Summer Pride Season Kicks Off

The 2011 UK Gay Pride season is shaping up across the country but not in Plymouth… In 2010 Pride Event (the official pride) announced in August that they were not doing anything, The failed Pride Event handed over to Plymouth Out who announced a City Pride in March that didn’t happen either apparently not confirming the venue was beyond their control.

Thankfully the rest of the country is a bit more organised both Pride Torbay and Cornwall Pride have new websites and are promising bigger and better celebrations based on the success of their past events.

Pride Torbay will take place between 28th and 31st July

With a fantastic diverse mix of events including Torbay’s first parade that will be a ‘human rainbow’ so choose your colour. It will be interesting to see what the most and least popular colours are.

The original Rainbow Flag had eight colours (Designed by Gilbert Baker in 1978)

The first of eight fund-raisers The Royal Garden Party takes place on Friday 29th April (Royal Wedding Bank Holiday) at the Cliff House Hotel

Cornwall Pride will be on the 27th August (Bank Holiday Weekend) in Truro

Following the traditional Pride Format PARADE – PICNIC – PARTY Cornwall Pride is a ‘grass roots’ pride with a modern twist. It is amazing to see so many people attend and support Cornwall Pride in one of the country’s smallest cities. The support from the locals is heartfelt as Cornwall Pride ‘Punches above it’s weight’ giving the City of Truro a Pride Celebration that is memorable and something to be proud of. As this is a bank holiday weekend if you wish to enjoy the evening event and stay over book your accommodation early to avoid disappointment.

Birmingham Pride has traditionally been one of the first prides of the pride season taking place over the spring bank holiday weekend, Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th May 2011. Birmingham Pride Carnival Parade route has been extended for 2011 and is the best Parade route so far. Leaving from Victoria Square, making it’s way through the busiest shopping streets in the heart of the city, ending in the ‘Gay Village’ for a fun packed weekend.
