Based on the true story of Woodruff’s Buyer’s Club, the film has McConaughey’s performance at its fierce heart in a performance that will surely be winning awards in 2014.
Dallas Buyer’s Club is a portrait of the accidental AIDS activist and homophobe Ron Woodruff. Diagnosed with HIV in 1985 and told he only has 30 days to live, Woodruff (McConaughey) pleads with his doctor (Garner) for what was then the experimental drug AZT. Refused it because he won’t take part in the clinical trials, he first steals the drug but realising its toxic effect he begins to smuggle unapproved drugs over the border from Mexico where he meets Rayon (Leto), a sleek but troubled drag queen. They form an unlikely partnership selling treatments to the growing numbers of HIV and AIDS patients neglected by the medical establishment. Based on the true story of Woodruff’s Buyer’s Club, which had over 4000 members at any one time, the film has McConaughey’s performance at its fierce heart in a performance that will surely be winning awards in 2014.
