Three recent Plymouth College of Art graduates will be showing their
work at 45 Southside on the Barbican in Plymouth. The gallery has been
showing recent graduates work every autumn since opening in May 2009.
This is a great opportunity to see new talent before they get famous.
This year’s student come from three different disciplines.

Jon Hopper makes lamps in plywood, acrylic or steel. He creates
contemporary and stylish handmade lighting to counteract today’s throw
away culture. Jon has many skills and also makes sculpture in metal and
wood as well as a series of on=off machines, which aim to highlight some
of the issues with today’s consumer culture and it’s impact on the
world’s resources. Jon won this years prize awarded at the Plymouth
College of Art degree show by the Devon Guild of Craftsmen for his
series laser lighting.

Daryl Thomas McBride works in ceramics and creates beautifully abstract
forms, which are accentuated by his clever use of glazing techniques.
Daryl is inspired by Science Fiction as well as Natural History,
especially the sculptural shapes seen in fossils and seeds. His work is
constructed with great attention to detail creating beautiful abstract
forms, which are perfectly and visibly painstakingly arranged.

Kate Packer has graduated from her foundation degree this summer and
will continue to study for her Bachelor’s Degree at the College next
year. Kate makes wire drawings and jewellery. Like Daryl she draws her
inspiration from nature and makes insects, vegetables and pods all from
colourful wire. She has developed a high level of skill in using wire of
all thicknesses and is turning her craft into an art form.

The exhibition will run from 15th of October until 14th November 2011.
The opening view is on the 14th of October from 6pm and all are welcome.
