February is LGBT History Month 2013 – STEM People

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Trans History Month takes place every year in February. It celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community. 2013 is dedicated to Maths, science and engineering.

LGBT History Month UK have put together a publication that features  Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans pioneers in science, technology, engineering and maths and have helped change the world. We have converted the original Power Point presentation into a PDF document to aid sharing. Tomorrow on the 1st of February Pride in Plymouth will be launching the new Plymouth LGBT History site (formally the Pride in Our Past Project site). The new site brings content from the Plymouth LGBT Archive and other LGBT History sites together into a single resource.

The Enigma of Alan Turing Open Talk – Tuesday 26th June 2012

In the year marking the centenary of Alan Turing’s Birth, Professor Phil Dyke will be talking about the life and works of Alan Turing; and how his legacy has left its indelible mark on the modern world. This talk has been organised by the Plymouth Humanist and all are welcome. Cost - Voluntary Donation.

DATE: 26th June (Arrive for 7.15 for a 7.30pm start)

Venue: Royal Corinthian Yacht Club Maderia Road Plymouth (The Hoe)

2012 – The Alan Turing Year

It is fantastic to enter 2012 with the news that the Royal Mail are to honour Alan Turing on a 1st class stamp. The stamp will be released during LGBT History Month on the 23rd, February, 2012. The Alan Turing year marks the centenary of his birth on June 23rd 1912 and there will be events across the country to celebrate his life and achievements.

The last few years of Turing’s life was turned into hell by a society that criminalised and persecuted homosexuals, resulting in his suicide.

2012 is the Turing Year ( the centenary of his birth) lets celebrate the genius of this gay man.

Dear Alan is the first short film made by Pink Triangle Theatre.

This fantastic film was made with borrowed equipment and no budget.

Synopsis.

Clive is a secondary School Teacher with a deep respect and love for Alan Turing. Today is his 42nd birthday (the age Alan never reached) and he is meeting his Sister Ruth for an afternoon coffee to collect his cards, and something very special. Clive wrote a letter to Alan Turing when he was only twelve years old. Clive’s Mother, Elaine, also a Teacher, made sure that Clive learned about Alan during home School sessions, and then asked Clive to write Alan a letter as if he were still alive. Clive will be given the letter back today, and more than anything he wants to read it for Alan. He figures the best way to do this is to go to the tribute statue in Sackville Park, Manchester. Where else can you find this great man, sat waiting to hear you? For Clive, this is where Alan can still be reached, and spoken to.

Queen pays tribute to the gay codebreaker Alan Turing at Bletchly Park

The Queen dedicating the public memorial at Bletchley Park.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh unveiled a monument to commemorate the contribution made by code breakers at Bletchly Park to victory over Nazi Germany in the Second World War. In particular, The Queen paid tribute to the gay codebreaker Alan Turing, who was later forced to undergo chemical castration after being convicted of homosexuality.

“This was the place of geniuses such as Alan Turing. But these wonderfully clever mathematicians, language graduates and engineers were complemented by people with different sets of skills, harnessing that brilliance through methodical, unglamorous, hard slog. Thus the secret of Bletchley’s success was that it became a home to all the talents.”

Turing killed himself in 1954 aged 41 after being convicted of having a sexual relationship with another man.

A British court gave him the choice of going either to prison or undergoing chemical castration. He opted for the latter which involved high dosage injections of female hormones. He committed suicide two years later.

The Alan Turing Year, 2012, will be a celebration of the life and scientific influence of Alan Turing on the occasion of the centenary of his birth on June 23, 1912. Turing had an important influence on computing, computer science, artificial intelligence, developmental biology, and the mathematical theory of computability, and made important contributions to code-breaking during the second World War.
